| And this review listed on Amazon.com for the Book: "The Great
American Road Trip, US 1 Maine to Florida" by Peter Genoves: Reviewer:
Todd Stockslager: (written: November 29, 2009) "...... Now I live in
Raleigh, NC where Route 1 is still part of the landscape, and it remains much the same, although it traverses a
still-rural but suburbanizing landscape as it nears Raleigh, where the carnival atmosphere of stores, malls, car dealers,
and billboards sets up shop. And I can tell you that the Raleigh Road Outdoor Theatre (that's drive-in for those who remember
what that means) mentioned and pictured in the book (see pages 117-119 and the gorgous color picture of the still-the same
screen) is still in business and by all accounts thriving from our visit there this year. The bunker-like projection room
and snack bar, half submerged inthe center of the parking area, looks like it might have been unchanged since Genovese's 1999
visit--and two decades before. The playground still teams with youngsters, families still arrive in vans and pick-ups and
pile out into lawn chairs and chat with their neighbors, and on screen are still the three first-run features, the first at
dusk aimed at the kids, the second at families, and the third for those still awake and still paying attention (not necessarily
the same thing at a drive-in). And an added bonus, the local live rock band playing obscure movie themes before the shows
started on the screen! It was a piece of Americana not to be missed!
| The editors of Car and Driver Magazine named RALEIGH one of the "10 Best
Drivers' Cities in America" in their January 2010 issue. The editors said that NASCAR; the
various universities; the Research Triangle and The Raleigh Road Outdoor Theatre "in nearby Henderson" where
you can "get the drive-in experience of '50's American lore, see the latest family fare in a tailgating atmosphere...."
make RALEIGH one of the TOP 10! Also: MAINSTREET.com did an article on us: | To see a TV story featuring preservation of drive-in theatres, including

Here is a recent letter we received: (Monday,

I live in Hampton, VA and the nearest drive-in is over two hours away. I have been wanting to see a
movie at a drive-in for some time to relive childhood memories. I investigated wCarol

Memories from th 60's submitted by Bonnie:
I was young, but allowed to date on Saturday nights, but was told not
to go to the drive-in-movie, but of course being a stubborn teen, did it anyway. One night while at the movie, near the front
row, my then boyfriend handed me a cigarette to toss out the window, before I threw it out, I took a puff from it... not knowing
that my mom and dad were in the car right behind us... before I knew what was happening, my dad's head was in the window,
asking, "What are you doing with that cigarette, and I better never see you do that again". It scared me to death...for
my dad never said anything to me about anything. It was good that I had already thrown it out, for if I hadn't, I would have
swallowed it, right then and there.... Another time, I was there with the same boyfriend, and of course, was doing a little
kissing. Again, my mom and dad were parked near us, and again, I got the surprise visit at the window, to say the least, not
a pleasant one....
